The Smart Cities Mission deadline is extended to March 2025 to give cities more time to complete ongoing projects, with priority funding for those nearing completion.

In a sigh of relief for state governments grappling with timelines, the Housing Ministry has announced an extension for the Smart Cities Mission. The deadline for project completion has been pushed back to March 31st, 2025, following a request from Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

This extension prioritizes the completion of ongoing projects rather than initiating new ones. Cities will have additional time to finalize approved works, with a focus on projects nearing completion. The central government will prioritize funding these advanced projects to incentivize speedy progress.

The disbursement of remaining funds will also follow a first-come, first-served basis until September 2024. This move offers some breathing room for state governments while ensuring continued progress on transforming urban landscapes under the Smart Cities Mission.
