The Haryana government recently unveiled a significant initiative to bridge the housing gap for underprivileged families in urban areas. The ‘Mukhya Mantri Shehri Awas Yojana’, approved by the state cabinet, aims to provide affordable housing opportunities for economically weaker sections (EWS) residing in cities and towns across Haryana.
This program prioritizes families most in need, targeting one lakh beneficiaries who currently lack permanent housing. This includes those who are houseless or live in impermanent ‘kutcha’ dwellings. To qualify, a family’s annual income must be verified under Rs 1.8 lakh, and they cannot own a permanent residence in any Haryana urban area.
The scheme seeks to empower beneficiaries by offering them a plot of land – one marla, which is roughly 30 square yards. This provides them with the foundation to construct their own permanent houses, fostering a sense of ownership and stability. This move by the Haryana government is a commendable step towards improving the living conditions of its most vulnerable residents.
By addressing the critical need for safe and secure housing, the program has the potential to significantly enhance the overall well-being of EWS communities within the state.
