The MCD is seeking bids for Phase-2 of biomining at Delhi’s three landfills to address the issue of massive legacy waste.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated the process for the second phase of biomining legacy waste at its three major landfills: Ghazipur, Bhalswa, and Okhla. This move comes as the contract periods for the current operators are nearing their end.

The project aims to clear millions of tonnes of accumulated waste: three million tonnes each from Ghazipur and Bhalswa, and two million tonnes from Okhla. However, the deadlines for complete waste clearance are subject to several factors, including stopping the inflow of fresh waste and the formation of a dedicated statutory committee by the MCD.

Fresh bids were invited on July 15th, marking the second attempt by the MCD in the past year to find new operators. Approval from the civic body’s standing committee is necessary due to the significant financial implications involved.
