Real estate giant Shakuntalam Group is facing a major environmental controversy after allegedly authorizing the felling of nearly 1,000 trees on the grounds of a closed factory in Greater Noida. Environmental activist Vikrant Tongad raised the alarm after discovering the large-scale deforestation, prompting the forest department to launch a swift investigation. District Forest Officer (DFO) of Gautam Budh Nagar, Pramod Srivastav, confirmed the inquiry and promised stringent action against the company if found guilty.

Shakuntalam Group maintains they acquired the land legally, but their claim is overshadowed by the lack of requisite permits for tree removal. This absence of crucial documentation has cast doubt on whether the company received proper authorization before proceeding with the deforestation.

The incident has reignited a critical debate in India: how to strike a balance between environmental protection and real estate development. Environmentalists argue that unbridled development often comes at the expense of precious green cover, leading to ecological imbalances and long-term environmental consequences.

The outcome of the investigation and potential legal action against Shakuntalam Group will be closely watched. A strong stance against the company could set a precedent and send a clear message – that environmental regulations cannot be disregarded by corporations in the pursuit of profit, and that unchecked deforestation will not be tolerated.
